Biography

Gertjan Verbeek boasts an extensive coaching career after being appointed Adelaide United's Head Coach for the next two seasons. The Dutchman, predominantly a defender, spent his entire playing career at SC Heerenveen with the exception of being loaned to fellow Dutch outfit Heracles Almelo, amassing over 250 appearances across the first and second divisions in Holland. After retiring in 1994, Verbeek ventured into management and served as an assistant at Heerenveen for seven years before taking the reins of Heracles in 2001. Three years later he returned to the club he was synonymous with and led the Super Frisians to three fifth-placed finishes and implemented an attacking brand of football, but subsequently joined giants Feyenoord in 2008. Between 2010 to 2013, Verbeek was in charge of AZ Alkmaar and finished fourth in his first two years, before winning the KNVB Beker in 2013 courtesy of a 2-1 win against PSV Eindhoven. The now 57-year-old has also taken charge of German sides, 1. FC Nürnberg and VfL Bochum, while his most recent job prior to Adelaide was with FC Twente.
