Young Reds must stay alert ahead of Jets clash

Adelaide United Youth Team travel to Newcastle to take on the Jets Youth team in Round 15 of the Foxtel National Youth League.

The last time these two teams met back in December, the Young Reds were able to secure a 1-0 win at home which was the start of their seven game undefeated streak.

The streak which still continues has seen them keep five clean sheets out of a possible seven, winning five matches and drawing two.

And last week’s come from behind victory from 2-0 down at half time, only to be secured with a last minute winner, the Reds are full of confidence.

“I think it was one of the most exciting youth game wins I’ve participated in, in the last four and a half years, said Adelaide United Youth Team Coach Michael Valkanis.

“Now we’re creating a lot more then we were at the beginning of the season and obviously we’re scoring goals.

“(And) apart from last week, defensively I think we’ve done very well in the last seven games.’

Not only has the Reds defended well, but they’ve also scored eight goals in their last two matches, showing that they are team that is well balanced.

But in recent weeks the Newcastle Jets defeated the Western Sydney Wanderer’s away, along with a home win against second placed Perth.

And even though both teams sit at opposite sides of the table, along with Adelaide one up on the Jets earlier in the Season, Valkanis warns that they must stay focused.

“I don’t think there is a team in the youth league that you can take lightly, when you look at every team you’re talking about the best kids from that state, or region.

“If you’re not focused all day or you don’t go out playing good football then you’re not going to get a result.

“The jets have forced a few upsets in the youth league in the last couple of weeks.

“They’ve knocked a few teams off and they’ve had a few surprise results, and if we don’t be careful that could happen to us.”
