Adelaide United Youth have recorded a 2-1 win over Perth Glory Youth to maintain their undefeated start to the Foxtel Y-League 2018/19 season at Marden Sports Complex on Sunday.
Cooper Nunn broke the deadlock after finishing off a free-kick routine straight from the training ground, before an own after half-time doubled Adelaide’s advantage. Perth pinched a goal back late on but it proved inconsequential as the Reds deservedly held on for the three points.
Paul Pezos fielded a strong line-up which contained some of the more senior players in the Hyundai A-League squad. Ryan Strain, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, Nathan Konstandopoulos, Nikola Mileusnić and Isaac Richards all featured to get more minutes under their belts.
Adelaide were the much more dangerous outfit with Kristin Konstandopoulos and Mileusnić combining well down the right-flank.
The winger in particular caused the Glory defence several headaches with his sheer pace and ability to evade his opponents.
Inside 10 minutes, Mileusnić struck the post on a very tight angle to nearly open the scoring but it did not take long.
Louis D’Arrigo disguised his free-kick in a shooting position by opting to play a square pass to Nunn, at the edge of the box.
The centre-back duly obliged, rifling his low, left-footed strike into the bottom right corner to make it 1-0.
Stamatelopoulos had a great chance to increase the buffer but could not generate enough contact to beat Jackson Lee in goal.
But in the 64th minute, Adelaide got a second when Pacifique Niyongabire’s cross was turned in by Zayd Farah for an own goal.
Adelaide rarely looked troubled but did concede against the run of play with four minutes remaining as Ethan Brooks’ ball was clinically taken at the near post by Gabriel Popovic.
However, it counted for little as United held on to jump into first place of Conference A on seven points, ahead of their clash with Melbourne Victory at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
