Young Reds off to 2012 Weifang Cup

Adelaide United’s Weifang Cup squad has left for China.

Adelaide United-s Weifang Cup squad has left for China under the guidance of former Reds defender Angelo Costanzo.

Competing in the elite youth tournament for the second consecutive time, it is a fantastic opportunity for some of South Australia’s most talented youngsters, comprising of a mix of players from Adelaide United’s Youth Team, Development Academy, the AIS and local FFSA Clubs.

“The team has been training very hard for the last month and with a better understanding of the tournament having competed last year we feel more prepared and up to the challenge of playing against some of the best youth players in the world,” Costanzo said.

Hyundai A-League listed midfielder and Australian Under 17 representative Jacob Melling will captain the team as they attempt to mix it with a host of quality youth teams.

The tournament commences on August 14 with the Reds’ first game against Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng Youth.

Other teams taking part in the tournament include a Chinese Youth Team plus youth sides from CF Villarreal, SL Benfica, U.C Sampdoria, FC Luneng, Liaoning, FC Gold Coast, FC Kashiwa Reysol, FC Hangzhou & D.P.R.
