Three players to watch: #WELvADL Round 22

Thumbnail

It’ll be a battle between two of the Hyundai A-League’s top three teams when United host the Roar on Saturday, and with top spot potentially up for grabs, these three Brisbane men could be in typically fine form given what’s up for grabs.

Michael McGlinchey
Attacking midfielder, Michael McGlinchey, has the skill in his arsenal to unlock any Hyundai A-League defence. Whether it be from a set piece, or open play, McGlinchey‘s abilities with a football largely control the manner through which the Phoenix go forward in offensive situations. With three goals and three assists this season, McGlinchey has provided when necessary for Wellington, which have re-acquired his services until the end of the 2017/18 season. Key in the build-up to Phoenix’s opener against Melbourne City in their 2-1 upset over the Victorians, it was his expert cross that allowed Louis Fenton to sneak in and convert.

Round 21:

Roly Bonevacia
Dominant in the last meeting between Wellington and United at Westpac Stadium, Roly Bonevacia was rather hidden from proceedings during the Reds 3-0 triumph against Phoenix at Coopers Stadium. Depending on which Bonevacia turns up to the Cake Tin on Saturday, could significantly determine the winner of proceedings in Round 22, especially given Isaías’ absence. His blatant power going forward adds an exuberance to Phoenix’s football that when missed is a notable let down in their play, especially on the counterattack. His brace against Guillermo Amor’s men in Round 6 was clinical and the Reds will need to shut Bonevacia down well before he has the chance to wind up.

Round 21:
Total Shots: 2
Shot Assists: 1
Total Crosses: 1
Passing Accuracy: 66.7%

Albert Riera
Given his marching orders for two yellow cards against United when the two sides faced at Coopers in Round 12, Albert Riera can bring some fire to this weekend’s match throughout the midfield. Holding firm in front of Wellington’s back four, Spaniard, Riera, broke up play well throughout his side’s win over City last week and will surely look to do the same against the Reds when considering United’s quick movements of the ball through the middle of the park, but also out wide. With Stefan Mauk and Marcelo Carrusca both in fine form going forward, Riera will be the one looking to prevent as much United fluidity as possible.

Round 21:
Passing Accuracy: 71.4%
Interceptions: 5
Clearances: 3
Tackles Won: 66.7%
