Adelaide United FC has succumbed to Sydney FC 5-2 in their Foxtel National Youth League match at WIN Stadium in Wollongong.

The young Sky Blues started the first half of better and opened the scoring in the 12th minute due to a defensive mistake.

Once the Reds settled into the game the contest evened up and they had some good passages of play, Nikola Mileusnic, Anthony Costa and Ryan Kitto all with good chances to respond.

Things were looking positive but a bad mistake in their own half put the Reds- defence under pressure, Sydney awarded a penalty with Lachlan Barr shown a straight red card leaving United a man and two goals down at the break.

The second half was always going to be an uphill battle but to the Reds- credit they came out determined to fight their way back into the contest. However a third goal by the home team made it 3-0 before Anthony Costa was infringed in the penalty area and duly slotted home the spot kick to give United a glimmer of hope.

But another Sydney goal soon after doused any chance of a comeback, although Mileusnic did manage to get himself on the scoresheet.

With no senior Hyundai A-League players and two, Geoffrey Lino and Lachlan Barr, making their first appearance, Assistant Coach Angelo Costanzo could take some positives from the game.

“Overall I was happy with the performance and the way we worked and tried to implement the style and create scoring opportunities considering we were a man down,” Costanoz said.

“Taking into account we had two players make their debut and up to five players play their first game for the year, there are positives going into to the next couple of games.”
