Adelaide United-s Youth Team has shared the points in a 1-1 draw with Western Sydney in their Foxtel National Youth League match at Marconi Stadium.
The young Reds continued to work on developing the club-s new style being implemented by senior coach Josep Gombau. Adelaide controlled the majority of the game, evidence by the Reds completing 445 passes compared with Western Sydney’s 212.
The first half produced few clear cut chances but in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, Adelaide’s possession game created a couple of good opportunities but they were unable to capitalise. The breakthrough eventually came through an unfamiliar source, central defender Jordan Elsey opening the scoring when Bruce Kamau brought down the ball down with an excellent first touch before cutting the ball back to an unmarked Elsey to make no mistake from 12 yards.
However, the lead was short lived as the Wanderers equalised after some sloppy play in United-s attacking half. On a warm and blustery day in Sydney-s west, the fatigue factor began to set in and the hosts created two more opportunities, the first going wide of the mark while goalkeeper John Hall produced a fine block to deny the second.
While disappointed with the 1-1 result, Coach Michael Valkanis was pleased to see an improvement from the previous week.
Notably, the likes of Bruce Djite and Cassio also got some valuable game time as they continue to build up match fitness after recovering from injury.
“I was very happy with the first 70 minutes with the way we played, we kept possession and created good scoring opportunities, and this will only get better with time and with the continuous work on implementing the new style,” Valkanis said.
“I can-t fault the team-s effort but I am disappointed with the result as I thought we deserved the three points today.”
