Snapping away losing streak ahead of Melbourne visit crucial says Adlung

Daniel Adlung believes Adelaide United deserved their victory over the 10-man Western Sydney Wanderers in the final game of the regular season on Sunday.

The Reds recorded a thrilling 3-2 win at ANZ Stadium thanks to goals from Baba Diawara, Adlung and Ryan Kitto, remaining in fifth spot to end the campaign.

The result eliminated the chance for WSW to reach the finals with Brisbane Roar holding on to sixth place following their win over Perth Glory on Saturday night.

Adlung said the Reds felt compelled to give their best effort in spite of already qualifying for the finals to uphold the competition’s integrity.

“I think for us today was important to show our best performance,” the German told Fox Sports after the match.

“Brisbane won yesterday and if we were in the position of Brisbane they expect that we would give everything.

“I think we played a very good game today from both sides but in the end I think we deserved the win.”

United also snapped a three-match losing streak away from home and their first road triumph in nine league attempts against Western Sydney.

Adlung said the win puts the Reds in good stead ahead of their do-or-die Elimination Final against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park this Sunday.

“It’s good for us to know that we know we can win away from home,” he said.

“It’s always good if you play away to stay in a good shape and to get a victory.”

Adelaide United face Melbourne Victory in the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 Elimination Final on Sunday, 22 April at AAMI Park. Kick-off is at 5.30pm ACST.
