Guillermo Amor and George Mells are full of confidence ahead of Adelaide United’s match against the Newcastle Jets on Sunday, having all focus set on claiming three points against a fighting side.
The Reds are now undefeated in eight matches, and not since October 2010 have they lasted longer without a defeat, which was a stretch of 13 matches.
With United putting four away over Brisbane Roar last week, the Reds are in prime position to overcome Newcastle this weekend, following two failed attempts earlier this season.
And Reds’ Head Coach, Guillermo Amor, has said his side is prepared and focussed on continuing the recent momentum that has seen them climb firmly up the Hyundai A-League ladder.
“We are looking to win and we are at home, in front of our fans and at our stadium,” Amor said. “We will make this our moment.
“When you are winning games, it can be difficult to maintain the momentum but it is important that we remain focused as I believe the team deserves more.
“Tomorrow will be a difficult game with Newcastle wanting to put up a fight after their last match (a 6-1 loss at home to Perth Glory), but our players have the confidence to win.”
Reds’ midfielder George Mells, followed on from his Head Coach, echoing in the belief that United’s squad have their eyes firmly set on taking the three points from the match.
However, the young midfielder continued by saying the team’s fight against the Jets will be significant enough to once again push United into a tough battle at home.
“The most important thing is that the team keeps their form, and continues to win games,” Mells said.
“It will be a tough game, seeing as they lost last week. Any team that loses wants to come back firing but if we play our game and the football we know we can play, there shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
“We have to be patient and keep the ball, waiting for that right moment to break down their defence, being the key. Then finishing off our chances, which we have been doing well in recent games.
“We’re a team who loves having the ball, and if we’re encouraged to have it, we’ll take it because that’s what we’re looking to do anyway.
“We have to be confident within ourselves that we can pull off the victory, and go into every game having the will to win. By sticking to our game plan, that’s the best we can do.”
Adelaide United will face Newcastle Jets in Round 17 of the Hyundai A-League 2015/16 season on Sunday, 31 January at Coopers Stadium. Kick-off is at 4.30pm ACDT.
