Adelaide United’s Boxing Day match with Wellington Phoenix is worth “six points” according to Captain, Eugene Galekovic, with the Reds eager to end 2015 on a high and make it three wins out of four games.

ADLvWEL Round 12

Without a loss in three matches and securing two draws in that time, Adelaide United is a reinvigorated side that’s looking to cap off 2015 in style at Coopers Stadium tomorrow.

And the Reds’ Captain, Eugene Galekovic, says this will be the entire team’s focus as the players prepare for a difficult Boxing Day clash with Wellington Phoenix.

“Hopefully we win tomorrow afternoon and like all players, we’ll celebrate (Christmas) a little bit, but all our focus will be on the game,” Galekovic said.

“We have to keep going the way we have been in the last couple of weeks because if we drop off from it, we’re back to square one.

“Because of these good results that we’ve had, we’re believing in ourselves more and that increases our confidence, but that can change really quickly.

“It’s a big game and we haven’t lost in three matches. We really want to continue that momentum, get the three points, and make it three wins in four games.”

Having already met this season in Round 6, which resulted in a 4-2 loss to United, Adelaide are fully aware of the capacity Phoenix can perform at.

The Reds will be looking to end 2015 on a high with a win over the Phoenix on Boxing Day.

And with a plethora of attacking threats scattered through Wellington’s squad, Galekovic knows just how difficult the match will be for his side, but remains confident that the Reds can claim the win.

“Early on (in the season), we were playing good football in small patches, but now it’s much larger ones,” Galekovic explained. “That’s when we’re scoring our goals or winning our games.

“Our aim is to keep pressing high up and putting pressure on the other teams, causing turn-overs, scoring goals, and winning games.

“I think Wellington are a very good team and up front they’ve got a lot of quality. They can finish higher than mid-table this season and there’s no reason why they can’t be a top four side if all their players perform at their best.

“In saying that, they’re just a little bit above us at the moment. It’s a bit of a six-point game in a way because if they beat us they increase the gap a little more, but if we win then we close it.

“The squad that we have now is capable of doing better and I back my teammates. We started a little slow but we’re starting to hit our straps and I think if everyone is fit and in form, there’s no reason why we can’t climb the table.”

Adelaide United will face Wellington Phoenix in Round 12 of the Hyundai A-League 2015/16 season on Saturday, 26 December 2015 at Coopers Stadium. Kick-off is at 4.45pm ACDT
