Reds Youth record first win

Adelaide United-s Youth Team has recorded its first win of the season after defeating the Newcastle Jets 1-0 at Thebarton Oval.

The young Reds dictated play for extended stretches of the first half after starting with a bang when Matthew Bouzalas found an opening after a powerful overlap and interchange with Ryan Kitto. Bouzalas- shot glanced off of a Newcastle defender, past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, the referee awarding it as an own goal.

Anthony Costa almost doubled the lead on the half-hour mark when he cracked a shot past Ben Kennedy but onto the woodwork.

Not long after Awer Mabil also found the post after a good run by Kitto on the left, the home side unlucky not be up by more at the break.

The Reds started the second half in the same vigour and endeavour but in the 53rd minute the game took a twist when Cameron Watson was sent off for a tackle in the penalty area. From the resultant penalty, the Jets- spot kick struck the woodwork leaving the Reds in front.

The game became heated in the latter stages when Mabil-s afternoon ended in the 79th minute after he was crunched by three Jets, Reds skipper Dion Kirk also going down after receiving a heavy knock near the end of regulation time.

With three points in their keeping, Coach Michael Valkanis was proud of his team, particularly the intensity and work rate they showed when they were down to ten men for most of the second half.

“I was very pleased to see the players working hard on implementing the club-s new style for most of the game,” Valkanis said.

“When we went down to ten men the players showed good character and still made every effort to play our game.”
