FFA have confirmed Adelaide United will face Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium in the Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Final on Tuesday, 21 November.
The Reds will be vying for a record second Westfield FFA Cup, after clinching the inaugural trophy in 2014 following a 1-0 win over Perth Glory.
Adelaide advanced to this season’s final after a 2-1 semi-final victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at Campbelltown Stadium on Tuesday night.
Johan Absalonsen and a stunning long-range drive from Daniel Adlung sealed Adelaide’s progression.
The Reds also beat Newcastle Jets, Melbourne Victory and Victorian National Premier League outfit Heidelberg United in the previous rounds.
Meanwhile, the Sky Blues, who were last season’s finalists, brushed aside local NPL side South Melbourne 5-1 in the other semi-final on 11 October.
“FFA would like to congratulate both Sydney FC and Adelaide United for reaching the Westfield FFA Cup Final for a second time,” said FFA chief executive David Gallop. “Both teams have performed strongly in this year’s competition and deserve to be in the final.”
“In 2017 the Westfield FFA Cup Final will be played in New South Wales for the first time, after South Australia (2014) and Victoria (2015 & 2016) hosted the first three editions of the competition’s deciding fixture.
“FFA considered a range of factors in deciding between Adelaide and Sydney. It is important that, where possible, the Westfield FFA Cup Final is played in different locations around Australia to showcase the truly national nature of the competition. FFA is hoping to break the FFA Cup final attendance record beating last year’s number achieved in Melbourne.
“After weighing it all up and particularly considering the Hyundai A-League commitments and fixtures of both clubs around the Final date we decided on this occasion that the game should be played in Sydney,” he said.
“Adelaide United play Central Coast Mariners on Thursday 16 November in the Hyundai A-League while Sydney play on the Saturday 18th which is only three days before the Cup Final. Adelaide United and Sydney FC will also meet again in the Hyundai A-League in Adelaide just 10 days after the Cup Final.”
Following the venue announcement, Head Coach, Marco Kurz said the team is relishing the opportunity to compete for early season silverware.
“We are looking forward to a tough game against Sydney FC,” he said.
“They have shown they are a very strong side this season and reached the final last year.
“But we are confident going into this match and we cannot wait to play in it.”
