Reds in six goal ACL clash for the ages

Adelaide United and Jeju United have played out an all-time AFC Champions League classic following a 3-3 draw at Hindmarsh Stadium on Wednesday night.

All six goals came in a roller coaster second half in which the Reds opened the scoring from the penalty spot but instead twice came from a goal down to level the score.

Papa Diawara netted his first Adelaide goal to break the deadlock following a first half which presented plenty of chances for both sides.

However the lead was short lived when substitute Frederic Mendy netted within five minutes of being on the pitch.

The visitors took the lead with a worldie from their Brazilian import only for the Reds to immediately hit back with a strong header from Sergio Cirio.

The K-League leaders once again went ahead with just six minutes remaining but were again pegged back when Mark Ochieng found the back of the net in sensational fashion barely a minute later.

The Reds had a late chance to win it when Cirio made a weaving run towards goal in stoppage time but he shot over the bar as both sides were forced to settle for a draw.

The result is Adelaide’s first point in Group H and they’ll travel to Korea Republic on MD 4 for what looms as an unmissable return leg.

GOALS

1-0 Adelaide United: Papa Diawara (pen.) 51’

Jeju skipper Oh Ban-Suk was judged to have handled the ball in box following a blistering strike from Jordan O’Doherty. Diawara stepped up to the spot, sending goalkeeper Lee Chang-Geun the wrong way before converting.

1-1 Jeju United: Frederic Mendy, 61’

Mendy received the ball in the box with his back to goal, before showing good strength to turn and get a shot away which eluded Galekovic and went in off the far post.

1-2 Jeju United: Marcelo Toscano, 71’

The Brazilian striker was teed up outside the box and smashed the ball into the top corner, giving Galekovic no chance as it rippled the back of the net.

2-2 Adelaide United: Sergio Cirio, 73’

A fine cross from Ben Garuccio picked out Cirio in space at the front post, with the diminutive Spaniard heading strongly between the goalkeeper and the woodwork to level the scores.

2-3 Jeju United: Kwon Soon-Hyung, 84’

A second ball fell to the feet of the midfielder outside the box and he put his laces through it, with the ball skidding across the turf and sneaking past the outstretched Galekovic and inside the post.

3-3 Adelaide United: Mark Ochieng 85’

Jordan O’Doherty hit the crossbar with a long range shot with Kim Jae-Sung collecting the rebound a neatly teeing up Ochieng who curled a shot inside the far post.
