Adelaide United has defeated Melbourne City 3-1 at the City Football Academy in a pre-season friendly with Jimmy Jeggo, Marcelo Carrusca, and Sergio Cirio all on the scoresheet.
With perfect conditions greeting the two sides at the City Football Academy in Melbourne, both sides utilised the match in preparation for their respective Westfield FFA Cup Quarter Finals.
The Reds almost got off to the perfect start after a long ball from Carrusca broke the offside trap, setting Craig Goodwin off one-on-one with new City goalkeeper, Thomas Sorensen, but Goodwin’s effort was beaten away by the former English Premier League ‘keeper.
City had a chance to get an early goal in the 14th minute when Aaron Mooy found Stefan Mauk in-behind the United defence, but Mauk’s heavy touch let him down and the chance was squandered.
This was an opportunity the Victorian-based side would end up regretting, as moments later, Jeggo made it 1-0 for the Reds. An attempted City clearance found Dylan McGowan who headed the ball down for Marcelo Carrusca, whose neat flick for Jeggo sent our No. 18 through to slot the ball home.
Five minutes later, Carrusca bagged a goal for himself when his brilliant free-kick on the edge of the box deflected off the crossbar and into the back of the net, leaving Sorensen completely helpless.
City worked their way back into the match, having a chance from Erik Paartalu cleared off the line, however scores remained the same going into the break.
The match’s quick tempo continued into the opening stages of the second half, with United increasing their lead to three goals just before the hour mark.
A defence-splitting through ball from Isaías fed Sergio Cirio one-on-one with Sorensen, the Spaniard opening his body and beating City’s new No. 1 with ease.
The hosts managed to get a consolation goal back through Wade Dekker, but it was too little, too late for City, as the Reds’ secured the win.
