Reds’ perfect Cup record against Sydney

Adelaide United battle Sydney FC for Westfield FFA Cup Final glory at Allianz Stadium on Tuesday night.

It will be the third meeting between the two sides in the competition’s history with Adelaide boasting a perfect head-to-head record.

On both occasions Adelaide eliminated the Sky Blues in extra-time, in the 2014 quarter finals and again a year later in the round of 16.

Here is a quick recap of those two victories.

3-1 win (AET) – 21 October 2014 @ Allianz Stadium

The 2014 Westfield FFA Cup quarter final with Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium was always going to be a tightly contested match. Sergio Cirio struck first for the Reds before Alex Brosque restored parity after the break to force extra-time with the game deadlocked at 1-1.

Striker Bruce Djite, who had come close to scoring earlier in the game, would then single-handedly book Adelaide’s place in the last four. It was a sublime display from the then 27-year-old as he bagged two instinctive finishes inside the 18-yard box in extra-time.

2-1 win (AET) – 26 August 2015 @ Coopers Stadium

The last 16 encounter against the Harbour outfit in 2015 at Coopers Stadium was another evenly fought match with nothing separating the two teams in 90 minutes. Rhyan Grant opened the scoring for the visitors but Adelaide replied through Pablo Sánchez just prior to the interval.

The game appeared destined for penalties, until Dylan McGowan came to the fore. The central defender was left unmarked at the back stick to calmly finish in the 114th minute. Despite receiving his marching orders three minutes later, a 10-man United outfit held on to advance to the quarter finals.

Adelaide United will face Sydney FC in the Grand Final of the 2017 Westfield FFA Cup on Tuesday, 21 November at Allianz Stadium. Kick-off is at 7.00pm ACDT.
