Adelaide United will play Wellington Phoenix in the opening round of the inaugural FFA Cup.

The Wellington based side who recently signed former Reds striker, Nathan Burns, finished ninth in the 2013/14 Hyundai A-League Season.

Assistant Coach Michal Valkanis said the playing group was very excited about starting their FFA Cup campaign.

“We are all very excited about this new competition that we’ve been waiting for,” Valkanis said.

“It’s great that we are integrating the A-League with the local clubs. We are creating a competition that will involve everyone and allow football fans to support their local clubs and see how they go against other interstate or even A-League clubs.

We are looking forward to taking on Wellington and for us to play another A-League club is a good test heading into next season.”

Having finished sixth in the 2013/14 Hyundai A-League season, the Reds were placed in Pot B and could only be drawn against the other A-League sides, who finished in the bottom six, in the Round of 32.

The 16 matches in the Round of 32 of the Westfield FFA Cup 2014 will be split over four weeks (29/30 July, 5/6 August, 12/13 August & 19/20 August), with four games scheduled per week either on Tuesday or Wednesday nights. Fox Sports will broadcast at least ten matches in the competition from the Round of 32 onwards, including all four Quarter Finals, both Semi Finals and the Westfield FFA Cup Final 2014.

The opening match day of the Round of 32 is scheduled for Tuesday 29 July 2014 and all matches will be played in Australia.

Specific details in regards to dates, venues and kick-off times for the matches will be announced this Monday 30 June and all information will be available at adelaideunited.com.au
