Adelaide United FC defender Daniel Mullen is on the verge of joining Chinese Super League club Dalian Aerbin after an agreement was reached for the 22 year old.

In a whirlwind chain of events which saw Dalian Aerbin reveal its interest and an offer in the past 48 hours, Mullen flew out for China yesterday with the finalisation of a two year deal subject on him passing a medical.

Mullen has been an important part of United-s squad and more specifically a Reds defence that has conceded just two goals in the club-s current run to the Quarter Finals of the AFC Champions League.

However, after weighing everything up, the club approved the move in a decision that Adelaide United Football Director Michael Petrillo said was taken in the best interest of Mullen and the club and ultimately benefitted both parties.

“Dalian Aerbin came to us with a substantial fee for Daniel and he expressed his desire to head to China,” Petrillo said.

“It was a decision we did not take lightly because Daniel is an integral part of our squad and while it is always sad to lose a player and a character who has been fantastic both on and off the field, it is a wonderful opportunity for him to further his career.”

“Providing his medical is successful, we wish him the best of luck and thank him for the contribution he has made during his time here.”

Mullen scored five goals to go with 79 appearances in all competitions for the Reds since he joined his home town club in February 2008, his overall tally including two goals in 58 Hyundai A-League games across four seasons.

The Reds- squad returns for pre-season training on Monday, July 9.
