Riley McGree gave a blunt assessment after Adelaide United’s disappointing 5-2 loss against Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday night.

The Reds conceded four goals before half-time and were at times their own worst enemies following several defensive lapses in concentration.

McGree, who initially made it 1-1 from the penalty spot with his ninth of the Hyundai A-League season, admitted the performance was unacceptable.

“The fact we conceded five goals is not good enough,” he told Fox Sports after the match.

“We just didn’t set up right in defence and it’s something we need to work on hopefully going to finals.”

Adelaide have now conceded 17 goals in their past six away trips, an issue they must quickly rectify ahead of next weekend’s Original Rivalry clash against Melbourne Victory.

McGree was at a loss to explain why they cannot replicate their strong home performances on the road.

“No not really,” he said when asked why they have struggled away from home this year.

“I think we play to the best of our abilities and we come out on the field and really want to play and entertain our fans and win and tonight was not good enough.”

Adelaide United face Melbourne Victory in Round 21 of the Hyundai A-League 2019/20 season on Saturday, 29 February at Marvel Stadium. Kick-off is at 7.00pm ACDT. Live and Exclusive on Fox Sports, Kayo Sports and the My Football Live App.
