McGowan confident ahead of Phoenix fixture despite casualties

Dylan McGowan will be the leading centre back of the Adelaide United defence set to take on Wellington Phoenix on New Years Eve.

Tarek Elrich and Nigel Boogaard are both suspended after picking up their fifth yellow cards of the season against Sydney FC on Friday night, but McGowan is confident that whoever steps in will be prepared.

“There are players capable in every position and it could be a matter of Ben Warland (youth team) coming in or Cameron Watson stepping back, but I have every faith in each of the players in the squad.

“We are preparing as best we can for the match and the mood in the camp is at a high after picking up maximum points in a tough place in Sydney.”

The team will also be without playmaker Marcelo Carrusca, who limped off with a groin injury in the second half of the match against the Sky Blues, and Captain Eugene Galekovic who will be joining the national team in a pre-Asian Cup training camp.

But McGowan is adamant that the squad will be just as focused despite the missing players and the quick turn around.

“There’s no lying that any team would be affected losing four players at a time when they are playing lots of matches but it’ll be a good test for the rest of the season.

“We are professional players and we are here to do a job so we will be ready when the coach picks the best team for Wellington tomorrow.”

Our 3-0 win over Sydney FC was the first time the Reds have scored more than two goals in a match this season, and McGowan admits that finishing is something that the team needs to improve on.

“Our strength has always been creating chances and getting into goal scoring opportunities but our downfall has been not finishing these off.

“Wellington are a good side away from home and a little more concentration in the final third will (hopefully) see us get something from the game tomorrow.”
