Adelaide United v Brisbane Roar – Saturday, 6 February 2010

This season we will be looking ahead to the Reds’ Hyundai A-League matches by rolling back the clock and revisiting some of the club’s most memorable clashes against our upcoming opponents.

Adelaide United are looking to continue their great run of form so far this season when they face Brisbane Roar at Coopers Stadium on Friday night in Round 10 of the 2014/15 season of the Hyundai A-League. This fixture has produced a number of notable matches over the years and Round 26 of the 2009/10 season was no exception.

This particular season was a difficult one for both clubs, as they each struggled to find consistent form each week and with both sides desperate to finish strong the stage was set for a fiery affair.

United were without a win in their seven previous matches, meanwhile the Roar had just beaten eventual champions, Sydney FC, 1-0 a week earlier.

As was expected, both sides started the match at a high pace, but it was the Reds who inevitably started the better and took the lead after just seven minutes through Fabian Barbiero. Tenacious work by Mathew Leckie on the wing saw him find room to whip in a cross that was effectively met by Barbiero, who finished convincingly.

The rest of the first half was battled closely, as both teams sought after the game’s second goal, but at half time the score remained 1-0.

Yet just six minutes after the break, United found breathing room through vice-captain, Lucas Pantelis, after he managed to drive the ball home into the far corner of the net.

Later in the match, former Red, Marcos Flores, made his debut for the club after coming on in the 60th minute and Brisbane captain, Matt McKay, was sent off nine minutes from time after receiving a second yellow card.

But nothing impacted the score line further, as the match finished 2-0 in favour of the Reds. United would go on to win their next – and final – match of the season against Newcastle Jets 2-1, whilst Brisbane finished their season with a second consecutive 2-0 loss, but to the hands of Perth Glory. The Roar, however, still managed to finish one point above United, who finished bottom of the league.
