Trials and tribulations

Diligence, persistence, unrelenting and perseverance are just some of the superlatives that come to mind when describing Adelaide United’s Michael Marrone.

The defender has been an integral player in the Reds’ back-four for the best part of three years, occupying the right-back spot with assuredness. The unassuming, and arguably underrated Marrone goes about his business without all the adulation or limelight that is usually akin to the creative midfielders or strikers.

Marrone has been the epitome of consistency when on the field for United. It is something which the 30-year-old prides himself on, made manifest by the following anecdote. He recalled during his time with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), completing a survey about how he wanted to be received as a player. While others around him wrote down more glamorous answers, Marrone instead opted to be remembered for his dependability.

“I think back to when I was at AIS and I would’ve been like 17 or 18,” Marrone reminisced.

“I think I was filling out one of their surveys and it said when you’ve finished your career what do you want to be remembered as.

“And people were putting things like, I want to be a well-known striker etc.

“And I think at the time I even put then, I want to be known as a hard-working and consistent defender, so I think that’s been the goal throughout my career.”
