Marrone: Reds need to be clinical

Michael Marrone says the Reds must be more clinical in front of goal as they look to get back to winning ways this week against Perth Glory.

With Adelaide United playing out a scoreless draw against the Western Sydney Wanderers last week, Michael Marrone has called for the Reds’ to be more deadly in front of goal.

United struck the woodwork through Sergio Cirio and had another seven attempts on goal versus the Wanderers, but failed to convert one of their opportunities.

Nevertheless, the Reds are now five games without defeat and have picked up 11 points out of a possible 15, seeing Guillermo Amor’s squad full of confidence.

“Collectively, as a team, when you start getting results, your confidence starts to lift and that’s when you see players hit form,” Marrone said.

“The team is doing quite well at the moment, but we still need to get a lot more results to get up the table.

“Now it’s about making our chances count. We had a few really good chances (against the Wanderers) that would have been goals on any other day.

“We need to be more clinical in the front third, but the good thing is that we’re creating these opportunities because if we weren’t, maybe like earlier on in the season, we’d be worried.”

Michael Marrone says the Reds need to finish their chances if they’re to continue they’re climb of the ladder.

Marrone also mentioned how United’s players have been encouraged by their coaches to attack their opposition more, saying the team’s recent defensive solidity has given the Reds more freedom to express themselves offensively.

“Me, personally, I’m finding myself in good positions, but the entire team is more confident now that we’re set up well from the back,” he continued.

“The coaches are encouraging us to get forward more and generally we’re happy with where we are as a team and individually we’re good too.

“We haven’t conceded as many goals in the last five or six games, so we’re definitely defending well and everyone is getting more confident going forward.”
