Michael Jakobsen has described being officially appointed Adelaide United’s new Captain as a “big honour” at the Club’s 2019/20 Season Launch on Friday night.

Jakobsen had served as the team’s interim skipper this pre-season and in the FFA Cup 2019 matches following the departure of Isaías, but will now permanently assume the role for the upcoming Hyundai A-League campaign.

The 33-year-old, who is the seventh Captain in the Club’s history, has been with the Reds since the start of last season, since accumulating 33 appearances.

“It’s a big honour and some big shoes to fill after Isaías (departed the Club),” the Danish centre-back said at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

“So I’ll do my best and I’ll try to lead the team out on the pitch as best I can and hopefully I’ll do a good job.”

Jakobsen’s experience, leadership qualities, and consistent performances means he will be a worthy successor to Reds legend, Isaías.

The former Aalborg BK defender also wore the armband in his second year with Melbourne City before making the switch to Adelaide.

He added that the fact he and his family enjoy the Adelaide lifestyle has further made the transition of playing football in South Australia rather seamless.

“It’s a big part of it,” he said, on being happy with life away from the pitch.

“My family they’re really happy here, especially my kids they’re happy where they are and that makes it a lot easier for me and my wife.

“So we’re enjoy it here and hopefully we will make a good season this year.”

Jakobsen also felt the team is heading in the right direction under Gertjan Verbeek with the league season less than two weeks from commencing and being in a third straight FFA Cup Semi-final.

“We are on track,” he continued.

“I think we can still improve in a lot of things.

“It’s a new system. It’s a new coach, so there’ll always be a period of time where we have to get used to the ideas.

“But as I said before I think we are on the right track. We lost some good players, but you see some of the new signings here they’re filling in the gaps and I’m really happy with the squad right now.”

Adelaide United face Central Coast Mariners in the Semi-finals of the FFA Cup 2019 on Wednesday, 2 October at Central Coast Stadium. Kick-off is at 7.00pm ACST. Live and Exclusive on Fox Sports and Kayo Sports.
