Isaías believes the decision to be deployed as an auxiliary central defender for much of the game proved a tactical masterstroke.

Adelaide United beat Western Sydney Wanderers 2-1 in the Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Semi-final to advance to the title decider against Sydney FC on 21 November.

Johan Absalonsen broke the deadlock in the 13th minute before Daniel Adlung doubled the Reds’ advantage after the break with a mesmerising long-range swerving effort.

Isaías lauded the team’s work ethic and desire, knowing what was at stake.

“We worked really hard during the whole pre-season,” the Reds Captain told Fox Sports after the match.

“We knew that it was going to be a difficult game, they’re a very good team and play good football.

“We played away but we knew if we run and fight, we can win this game.”

The Spaniard, for the majority of proceedings, featured as the third centre-back when United was under long spells of pressure.

Head Coach, Marco Kurz’s decision ultimately proved ingenious, given the inexperienced centre-back partnership of Ben Warland and Jordan Elsey.

The ploy surprised the Wanderers as they struggled to break the visitors down – indicative of only managing to score a controversial penalty through Brendon Santalab with 20 minutes remaining.

Isaías praised the decision by Kurz and intimated as long as the team wins he does not matter where he plays.

“It was a decision from Marco and we think that when we defend deeper on the field, we think it’s better to defend with three central defenders on this occasion in this game,” he said.

“And I think it worked so I’m very happy about that.”

The 30-year-old, who won the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup in 2014, was confident his side could claim the trophy for a record second time next month.

“I think we have a really good group inside and outside on the pitch,” he said.

“And I think it’s very important and hopefully we arrive to the final and we can win it again.”

Adelaide United host Melbourne City in Round 4 of the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 season on Saturday, 28 October at Coopers Stadium. Kick-off is at 7.20pm ACDT.
