Mirko Boland says Adelaide United are determined to solidify fourth spot in the Hyundai A-League standings against Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Saturday night.

With the Reds lying two points clear of fifth-placed City, coupled with Wellington Phoenix also dropping points to Newcastle Jets on Thursday, a favourable result will only enhance their top four aspirations.

A victory, however, would obviously be even more beneficial than just a draw in consolidating their current position on the table.

Boland said although it is not a must win game, they will be doing everything they can to secure the three points.

“We want to win and there’s a big chance (to distance themselves from City), we know that,” Boland insisted.

“We can read the table, but it’s not the game of the season, but we want to fly there and try and win this game.”

The dynamic German midfielder made his first appearance since Round 4 last week against Brisbane Roar, after suffering a long-term hamstring injury.

He was a half-time substitute and one of the catalysts behind the Reds’ dramatic comeback win.

Boland revealed he has pulled up fine after his first outing since November and is raring to go.

“Everything feels fine, I feel really good,” Boland told reporters at Adelaide Airport.

“It was a really bad injury, a long time, a hard time but now I’m really happy to be back.”

Boland said City have a number of strengths they will need to be wary of, though was confident the Reds can play they match on their terms.

“It will be a hard game,” he said.

“I think most games in the league are really even and Melbourne City is a team that’s really good, and have a decent shape.

“So we’ve to stay strong defensively and create our chances, but I’m feeling really confident.”
