Craig Goodwin says the floodgates will soon burst open for Adelaide United in front of goal, citing the chances created by the Reds against Sydney FC last week as a good example of just how close they are to registering a bagful of goals.
Against Sydney FC in Round 10, United registered 12 shots towards goal and whipped in an astonishing 32 crosses during the game’s 90 minutes, enjoying 66.4 per cent of possession.
And Goodwin believes this, along with the two consecutive wins the squad are currently enjoying, will stand the Reds in good stead as they look to overcome the Newcastle Jets this Friday.
“The wins have helped (our confidence), but in general we’ve definitely improved in all areas of the field (in recent games).
“We’ve been a lot more structured and haven’t conceded many goals, and in an attacking sense we’ve created many more chances.
“You obviously want to put the majority of the chances you have in the back of the net and that wasn’t there against Sydney. But it’s definitely something we work on in every session and the good thing is that we’re creating chances and we’ll start putting a lot more away soon.”
With United’s preparations in full swing for this week’s match with the Jets, Goodwin explained that he and his teammates are completely aware just how far Newcastle can push the Reds, despite the hosts being six games without a win.
“Going to the game itself, we’re very confident. We know Newcastle is never the easiest place to go but they’ve not had the best of times in recent weeks.
“That’s not to say that’ll make it any easier for us, but we’re performing well after the last two wins and hopefully we can continue this run and pick up another three points.
“We have to try and pick up as many points as possible. Four wins in total is the goal for the coming few games and if we can keep pushing and keep performing well, (the points we earn) will have us catch the others above us.
“If we win against Newcastle we’ll go to 12 points and we’ll be tied with them, so that’ll put us in a very good position, but we have to go to the Jets and put in the hard yards and get the points.”
