An attacking mindset from both sides is what makes Adelaide United-Brisbane Roar clashes so entertaining to watch, according to Reds coach Josep Gombau.
The Spanish manager, speaking after his side’s impressive 2-1 away victory over the Brisbane Roar in the opening round of the Hyundai A-League, said he was thrilled at having defeated the reigning champions twice in the early part of the season, following on from the Reds’ FFA Cup success.
The thrilling match was decided by a James Donachie own goal in the second half after Thomas Broich and Bruce Djite had both scored with delightful strikes in the opening term.
“I’m so happy today for the result, for the way that we played, and also for the game that we showed in front of all the fans – not just Adelaide fans, football fans,” said Gombau.
“I think that the standard of this game is very high, Brisbane played an excellent game and I think that we did our job also.”
The former youth coach at Barcelona said Adelaide had enjoyed its fair share of success against the Roar in recent seasons due to the fact that Mulvey’s side were willing to play flowing football and not trying to close down the match.
“In the end, Brisbane is a very good team and they allow us to play,” said Gombau.
“They allow us to play because they are more interested in playing than destructing.
“Both teams want to play. They can win and we can win.
“Sometimes when you go to play a team that doesn’t allow you to play, they can beat you at the end from a corner or from a foul, and you feel at the end that you didn’t play.
“In the end this is worse for the people who are watching the game.”
