South Australian goalkeeping prodigy Joe Gauci turned in a heroic performance to secure his first ever A-League clean sheet and ensure the Reds marched to six straight wins with a 1-0 win over Sydney FC on Sunday night.

The former West Torrens Birkalla and Adelaide City shot stopper was immense in just his third A-League start making four saves including a world class reflex to deny Patrick Wood in the 89th minute.

Speaking to Fox Sports following the match, Gauci said he was happy to be given an opportunity at A-League level to prove his wares.

“I’m really proud,” said the 20 year old. “It’s been a bit of a long road for me to get my opportunity so I’m really happy and the boys in front of me were essential tonight.

“I wasn’t tested much but they really helped me out.”

Speaking about his reactionary save from Wood, Gauci said he didn’t have any time to think about it.

“No there is no time to think with that,” he said. “I wasn’t really called upon much during the game, but you could have moments in the game and you have got to be ready. I’m just happy I could keep it out of the net.”

Just minutes later from the resulting corner, Gauci was again under pressure in a goalmouth scramble, and was required to punch the ball away as bodies flew to the ground around him.

“These are the sort of moments you dream of as an Adelaide boy. At Coopers (Stadium) in front of friends and family so I’m just really happy and I guess you’re right, it did give me a bit of confidence for the last couple of minutes.”
