Galekovic, Reds focused on Mariners scalp

Adelaide United goalkeeper, Eugene Galekovic, insists he was pleased with the determination shown in the Reds’ 2-2 draw with the Wellington Phoenix at Coopers Stadium last Sunday.

Riley McGree opened the scoring for the hosts, but after falling behind United showed immense character in the blistering conditions to net a deserved equaliser through Nikola Mileusnic.

Galekovic praised the resilience the squad displayed and believes the Reds were unfortunate not to have come away with the three points.

“The effort the boys put in on the weekend was tremendous and now we’ve to look forward to the next game,” Galekovic said.

“At the moment the results aren’t there and sometimes the football isn’t that great.

“But if you look to last game the effort was there and we should’ve got more than one point from the game.

“We just have to keep moving forward, we’re not in a great position on the table and every day is a challenge at training to try and improve and get better.”

Galekovic revealed he is excited about participating in the impending Asian Champions League, but maintains the Reds are solely focused on Sunday’s match against the Central Coast Mariners.

“We’ve to worry about two competitions obviously, our focus is not really there yet because there’s still a few weeks to go,” Galekovic said.

“It’s in the back of our minds and definitely in the back of our coaches’ minds and trying to prepare a squad for that.

“And trying to bring some players for that and hopefully everything comes together nicely.”

With Adelaide situated at the bottom of the Hyundai A-League standings, Galekovic admits continuing to work hard is the key to climbing the ladder.

“We’re not in a good moment and we’ve to try and get ourselves out of it and try to improve,” he continued.

“We just have to try and get ourselves out of it and keep fighting.”

Adelaide United will face Central Coast Mariners in Round 18 of the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 season on Sunday, 5 February at GIO Stadium. Kick-off is at 4.30pm ACDT.
