Front third the focus to take down Jets

Adelaide United FC Coach Josep Gombau will be looking for his team to display a killer instinct and better cohesion in attack when they face the Newcastle Jets at Coopers Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Returning for their solitary home game in a stretch of six matches, Gombau revealed much time had been spent this week on fine tuning the movement and combination in the front half of the pitch.

Gombau has been gradually going about moulding the Reds- style in the opening month of the season. A fortnight ago it was the defence that took precedence, then against the Western Sydney Wanderers last weekend it was the midfield, and tomorrow Gombau is hoping the Reds will be able to combine these pieces up front.

“Two weeks ago after the Melbourne Victory game we worked a lot on the build up from the back, something we did really well in the next game against Central Coast,” Gombau said.

“Against Central Coast we did not play well in the midfield lines, we worked on the midfield and in the last game (against Wanderers) we played well in the midfield lines.

“This week we have been concentrating on the last third of the field and I hope that tomorrow we will do well, but this is step by step. We have problems, we find solutions and day by day the team is building.”

The Reds face a Jets team that is still searching for its first win of the season, and their search is set to be bolstered by the inclusion of marquee forward Emile Heskey, who has missed the first four games because of injury.

While admitting he is pleased to see Heskey back in action, Gombau said there would be no extra emphasis put o the former England, Liverpool and Leicester City striker.

“Heskey is one more player. We-ll play 11 against 11. He is a player of course who has a lot of quality, he is a big name in Europe but in the end he is a person and we need to defend in the normal way that we are defending,” Gombau said.

“For me what is important is the team, not the individual players. I hope that he plays because if he plays it adds value to the league and I want that the best players want to come here because the A-League will become even stronger.”

Cassio and Bruce Djite have both been included in an extended squad, the pair pressing heir claims for a spot on the bench.
