As Adelaide United host ladder leaders Sydney FC on Sunday night, let us revisit some of our most memorable strikes.
Jimmy Jeggo’s equalising thunderbolt – 11/12/15 @ Coopers Stadium
They say if at first you don’t succeed try, try again. That old adage could aptly be applied in the build up to Jeggo’s thunderous effort. The midfielder initially struck a stinging drive which smashed the crossbar, but Jeggo would not be denied at the second time of asking. After the ball bounced off the bar it was headed back by Pablo Sánchez, who found Dylan McGowan. The centre-back cushioned his header for the then 23-year-old, who fired a first-time half-volley from outside the 18-yard box, taking a slight deflection and sending the crowd into jubilant scenes.
Fábio Ferreira’s clinical finish – 21/03/14 @ Coopers Stadium
Fábio Ferreira had a tendency for the spectacular. His terrific finish against the Sky Blues was just another example of his prowess. Marcelo Carrusca threaded a wonderful pass for the Portuguese winger and he did the rest after feigning to go on the outside he cut inside his opponent before calmly finishing beyond Vedran Janjetovic.
Alemão’s sumptuous shot – 03/01/09 @ Adelaide Oval
Adelaide were protecting a narrow 1-0 lead when dynamic full-back Alemão quashed hopes of a Sydney comeback on 82 minutes. The Brazilian burst through the Sky Blues defence latching onto a brilliant aerial through ball. He then dispatched a clever half-volleyed effort into the top corner and sealing a crucial three points.
Travis Dodd’s sublime strike – 12/02/06 @ Hindmarsh Stadium
Adelaide found themselves a goal down in the first leg of the major semi-final of the 2006 finals series. However, Dodd responded in stunning fashion. A well-executed long ball by Carl Veart picked out the Adelaide speedster, who drove past Mark Milligan drawing the goalkeeper off his line and then rounding him to emphatically equalise.
Adelaide United will face Sydney FC in Round 16 of the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 season on Sunday, 14 January at Coopers Stadium. Kick-off is at 6.30pm ACDT.
