‘Flecha’ eager to deliver

Heading into his second Hyundai A-League season, lively Reds winger Fabio Ferreira is determined to make it one to remember both on an individual note and for the legion of Adelaide United supporters.

In 2012/13 a mild dose of osteitis pubis saw Ferreira, or ‘Flecha-, (which means arrow in Spanish) as he is known amongst his team mates, missed nine games in his debut season, while a minor ankle injury has slightly interrupted him this pre season. But both of those hindrances are no longer an issue and he played in the Reds- 1-1 draw with the Western Sydney Wanderers last Sunday.

With those setbacks behind him, the former Chelsea youth player is chomping at the bit to perform in the Reds- final two trial matches and be in line for selection in Round 1.

“Now I have to get fitter and stronger for the start of the season…I-m feeling good after the game and I just need to train hard and play hard so that in two weeks I-m ready to go,” Ferreira said.

Adding to his enthusiasm is the kind of football that Coach Josep Gombau has brought to the table and wants United to play. Going from anyone who saw Ferreira play last season, Gombau-s intent to create opportunities and play with width is sure to be right up his alley.

But as has been said throughout the pre season, Ferreira again reinforced that it is still very much a work in progress. Following encouraging performances against the Central Coast Mariners and Wanderers, the next two trial games against Melbourne Heart and Melbourne Victory will again provide an opportunity to see how the Reds are situated heading into Season 9.

The Reds take on the Heart at Epping Stadium tomorrow afternoon (Friday 27 September) before facing the Victory behind closed doors at AAMI Park on Thursday 3 October.

“Tomorrow will be a great test for us again, and then we play Melbourne Victory the week after, so hopefully these two games will be beneficial for when we start the season and we will be comfortable and play the style that he (Gombau) wants to play.”
