Following his goal scoring contribution in Adelaide United’s match against Perth Glory last weekend, Sergio Cirio says he was happy to be back on the score sheet, but is happier that it helped his team claim the three points.
Scoring his second goal of the season following his maiden 2015/16 conversion in Round 5 against Melbourne City, Sergio Cirio was understandably pleased to return to the Reds’ score sheet.
But in typical Cirio style, the Spaniard was far more concerned with the overall result of the team, stating the team’s win over Perth Glory as a much more important statistic.
“I’m very happy because I scored and because we won our first game away from home,” Cirio said.
“As forwards, sometimes it’s hard to score goals, but once you score one, normally you keep going.
“Hopefully I can score more goals in the coming games, but the most important thing is that the team keeps winning games.”
As Cirio mentioned, United’s triumph over the Glory was their first win of the campaign away from home, something the Reds have been desperate to improve upon considering the squad lost their first four consecutive away fixtures.
But not only are Cirio and his teammates looking to better their travelling form, the Reds are also eager to continue their recent run of form at Coopers Stadium.
“The start of the season for us was a little bit difficult, but we kept working and I think we’ve slowly been doing better,” Cirio admitted.
“We scored three goals away from home (against Perth) and having turned around the situation that we were in (closer to the start of the season), I feel we have overcome some difficult challenges.
“We need to keep working step-by-step and keep wining the games at home in front of our supporters and keep winning games away from home too.”
At the moment, United are preparing to face the Central Coast Mariners, yet, despite residing at the bottom of the Hyundai A-League ladder, the Reds venturing into uncharted territory, with the two sides yet to meet so far this campaign.
Cirio is relatively unconcerned, however, saying if the Reds play their football and focus on their game, the Mariners will return to New South Wales empty handed.
“We need to look at our season one game at a time and we’re focussing on Central Coast Mariners.
“Last week they drew with Melbourne Victory, but played a really good first half. We will need to take care when we play them because they have lots of good players up front that are very quick and dangerous.
“But if we do the things that we have been doing in our last few games and use our home supporters to our advantage, I think we can get the three points.”
Adelaide United will face Central Coast Mariners in Round 15 of the Hyundai A-League 2015/16 season on Saturday, 16 January at Coopers Stadium. Kick-off is at 4.45pm ACDT.
