AUFC Women gallant in heartbreaking loss

Despite Alex Chidiac’s equaliser, Adelaide United fell 1-2 to Sydney FC in Round 9 of the Westfield W-League 2017/18 at Marden Sports Complex on Friday night.

Head Coach, Ivan Karlovic, named an un-changed starting XI from last week, in a bid to maintain consistency in their footballing performances.

In a match displaying high-quality football and skill from both sides, the scoreline remained locked during the opening 20 minutes.

After end-to-end efforts on goal, it was Kylie Ledbrook for Sydney FC who drew first blood with a neat tap-in following Georgia Yeoman-Dale’s assist.

Before the break, it was more of the same, as the Reds fought hard for an equaliser through Makenzy Doniak and Chidiac.

Adelaide continued their bright start with some beautiful play down the wing and were rewarded through Chidiac who put away her penalty-kick, after being brought down by Caitlin Cooper in the 55th minute.

The hosts pushed on, dominating the second half with one of the best chances coming from Chidiac's free-kick that was saved on the goal-line.

But Caitlin Foord was able to capitalise in injury time against the run of play, and win the game for the Sky Blues.

Key moments:

24’ | CHANCE! Condon shoots a venomous shot from distance that Audrey Bledsoe tips over the bar.

25’ | GOAL: Ledbrook opens the scoring with a tidy finish off of Yeoman-Dale’s cross.

31’ | Doniak tries a shot that Bledsoe again gets her fingertips onto the end of.

32’ | Chidiac has her shot blocked on the goal-line by Princess Ibini.

44’ | CLOSE! Doniak curls in a beautiful strike that goes only inches over the crossbar.

48’ | Double chance for Doniak, with her second strike going wide over the bar.

55’ | PENALTY - GOAL! Chidiac slots away the penalty with a lovely hit into the top-left corner to equalise.

72’ | Doniak swings in a stunning free-kick that Bledsoe manages to save on the goal-line!

90+3’ | GOAL: Foord scores the winner for Sydney, slotting away her shot.
