Taylor Regan is not one to dwell too much on the pretty side of the game.
He may not be the most attractive centre-back with the ball at his feet compared to some, but what Regan may lack in technical ability he easily compensates this with the defensive attributes he possesses. And that should be the number one focus for a defender – their responsibility to defend first.
With the art of defending seemingly dying in the modern game, it is refreshing to see someone like Regan value the ‘dirty’ side of the game. In recent times, there has been a palpable obsession with centre-backs needing to have the distribution competencies of an Andrea Pirlo or an Andres Iniesta. Sure boasting an apt passing game is important, but not to the point of disregarding the defensive responsibilities.
Thankfully, Regan differs from the typical ‘modern day centre-back’. His determination and desperation to protect his goalkeeper in an attempt to preserve a prised clean sheet is a sight to behold.
The 28-year-old joined the Club at the beginning of the season as an injury replacement, and has represented the Reds’ shirt with pride in each of his six appearances.
